Sydney Hustles to Secure 3×3 Basketball

The world’s most popular urban team sport will arrive at Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal this weekend, with 3×3 basketball set to hit the Harbour City.

Sydney will host the 3×3 Pro Hustle event, a national series developed by the National Basketball League (NBL) and Basketball Australia, starting this Saturday May 12.

It will be followed on May 18-19 by Australia’s first ever 3×3 Challenger event, which gives teams the chance to qualify for the 3×3 World Tour.

Both events have been secured for Sydney by the NSW Government via its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said it was a coup to secure the elite 3×3 basketball events for Sydney.

“With 3×3 basketball set to make its Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020, the NSW Government is pleased to be able to bring some of the world’s best 3×3 players to Sydney to showcase this exciting sport,” Mr Marshall said.

“These events will see more than 400 players from around Australia and the world converge on Sydney, which is great news for local businesses, accommodation providers and tourism operators.

“The 3×3 Challenger will include 11 international and five Australian teams competing and with five of the top eight teams in the world competing in Sydney, it promises to be an exciting event for basketball fans,” he said.

NBL Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Loeliger thanked the NSW Government and Destination NSW for their support of the events.

“Sydney Harbour will provide a spectacular backdrop for what will be exciting events showcasing 3×3 basketball and featuring some of the world’s best players,” Mr Loeliger said.

“This is a very exciting time for Australian basketball with the recent signing of NBA star Andrew Bogut by the Sydney Kings and 3×3 basketball is only going to increase the popularity of the sport in Australia.”

The 3×3 Pro Hustle will be held at Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal from 12-13 May, 2018. The 3×3 Challenger will be held the following weekend on 18 and 19 May.
